A Rare Departure From the Ring

CM Punk has broken his silence on a three-month hiatus from WWE television that followed WrestleMania 42. Contrary to the industry’s typical pattern of medical leaves, the wrestler clarified that his absence was not injury-related. It stands as a rare instance in his long career where he stepped away from the spotlight without a surgical requirement.

Processing Grief in the Shadow of the Title

The wrestler faced a period of intense personal loss while serving as the World Heavyweight Champion on Raw. He revealed that he lost several close friends during his tenure with the belt, yet he maintained a grueling professional schedule throughout the ordeal.

“I was World Heavyweight Champion on Raw for quite some time, and during that entire time I was champion, I had at least three or four people who were very close to me pass away,” Punk told ESPN New York. “Each time, I was at work the next day. I didn’t talk about it publicly… there was still some stuff I needed to process. So my time away was just to kind of reset.”

The Value of Life Outside the Squared Circle

Punk utilized the time off to reconnect with his wife, former WWE star AJ Lee, to whom he has been married since 2014. He framed the break as a conscious, healthy decision to prioritize his personal life over the relentless grind of professional wrestling.

CM Punk & Michael Landsberg Intense Interview

“In my business, in this company, for me to be able to say that I had time off and it wasn’t due to injury or surgery is remarkable,” Punk said. “One day away from my wife is one day too many. I’ve been with her every single day, and now that I’m back I’m champ, and I’m on the road. I’m as full time as full time gets.”

From Recovery to Undisputed Champion

After a brief appearance on Raw the night after WrestleMania to confront Cody Rhodes, he vanished from the screen until July 6.

Since his return, Punk has wasted no time, defeating Sami Zayn to secure the Undisputed WWE Championship. He is now back on a full-time road schedule, preparing for a series of upcoming title defenses. Addressing those who questioned his time away, Punk remains defiant.

“If you’re upset that I was mourning some dead friends, I think that’s a you problem,” Punk said. “We should celebrate people taking some time for themselves.”
