Sadhguru, founder of the Isha Foundation, is partnering with Mumbai-based studio Graphic India to produce an animated feature film titled Shiva: The Adiyogi, according to a press release issued by the filmmakers. The project explores the origin story of Shiva, framing him not as a traditional god, but as the primordial yogi who introduced spiritual liberation to humanity.
Production Background and Creative Team
According to production announcements, the film is based on a story co-created by Sadhguru and Sharad Devarajan, an award-winning creator who serves as co-founder of Graphic India and producer of the film. Graphic India is recognized for its work on the animated mythology franchise The Legend of Hanuman. Shiva: The Adiyogi is positioned as a global animated feature aimed at blending traditional mythology with large-scale visual storytelling.
Plot and Narrative Themes
According to the filmmakers’ press release, the narrative moves from the darkness preceding creation up to the peaks of Kailash. The story addresses themes of love, loss, wrath, and spiritual awakening. Specific narrative elements highlighted by the producers include the rampage of Veerabhadra—described in production notes as a being born from grief—and the devotion of two women attempting to prevent Shiva from retreating from existence. Devarajan described the project as a cosmic love story featuring large-scale action and a narrative depicting how wisdom was first shared with humanity.
Sadhguru’s Perspective on the Adiyogi
In statements released through the production announcement, Sadhguru explained the conceptual approach to the central figure. According to Sadhguru, yogic culture views Shiva as the Adiyogi, or the first yogi, and the Adiguru, or the first guru, rather than a conventional deity. Sadhguru stated that Shiva introduced the concept that natural laws are not permanent restrictions, noting that individuals who strive can transcend physical limitations to attain liberation. Describing this spiritual process as a breaking of physical laws, Sadhguru referred to practitioners of this path and Shiva himself as “outlaws.”
