The Netherlands recorded its hottest summer since measurements began in 1901, driven by persistent heatwaves, unprecedented consecutive tropical nights, and severe drought conditions, according to data released by the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI).
Record-Breaking Temperatures at De Bilt
The average temperature measured at the De Bilt weather station reached 19.3 degrees Celsius over the three-month summer period, breaking the previous record of 18.9 degrees Celsius set in 2018, according to reports from NOS. The extreme heat pattern established itself early, beginning in June, which is historically the least warm month of the summer season. KNMI climate expert Peter Siegmund told NOS that the anomalies surprised researchers, pointing to an unprecedented frequency of extreme heat days and warm nights.
“We had the highest number of days above 35 degrees, the number of tropical days is higher than ever, never before have we had so many consecutive days with nighttime temperatures of 22 degrees or higher,” Siegmund told NOS. In response to the June temperature surges, the KNMI issued its first-ever code red weather alarm for extreme heat. The seasonal progression brought recurring heatwaves, particularly across the southern regions of the country, alongside significant hydrological strain as river levels dropped to historic lows.
Climate Scenarios and Future Projections
According to Siegmund’s calculations, the extreme summer conditions experienced in 2026 can be expected to recur roughly every five years under current climatic parameters. As global temperatures continue to rise, this five-year interval is projected to shorten.
Under the high emissions scenario, the temperatures recorded this summer are projected to become the statistical average for a Dutch summer by the year 2050. Conversely, a low emissions scenario—characterized by rapidly decreasing global emissions—would see temperature increases stabilize around 2050, resulting in a four-degree difference in average summer temperatures compared to the high scenario by the end of the century. Siegmund emphasizes that proactive climate policy over the coming decades remains a critical factor in determining long-term outcomes.
Transition to Autumn Conditions
While historical records indicate that Dutch autumns have grown progressively warmer and wetter over the past century, the exceptionally high temperature of the surrounding sea creates conditions for potential heavy rainfall events in the coming months. River systems, which reached record lows during the summer, are expected to require several months of sustained precipitation to fully recover.
