According to The Independent, Mas inherited the red leader’s jersey after five-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar crashed out during the eighth stage. At the time of the crash, Pogačar held a 3-minute, 50-second lead over the Spanish rider. Felix Gall secured third place overall, finishing 2 minutes and 44 seconds behind Mas.
Mas previously finished as the Vuelta runner-up in 2018, 2021, and 2022, alongside a third-place finish in 2024. His victory marks the highest Grand Tour achievement for a Spanish rider since Alberto Contador won the Giro d’Italia in 2015. Contador was also the last Spaniard to claim the Vuelta title, back in 2014, as reported by The Independent.
Granada Finale and Podium Standings
Norwegian rider Tobias Johannessen won the final 102-kilometer (63-mile) stage through Granada, which featured technical climbs and descents across four circuits in the medieval city before race times were neutralized for the final lap, according to The Independent. Johannessen edged Alessandro Romele in a two-man sprint, while British rider Matthew Brennan finished fourth in the stage.
Following the stage finish, Mas crossed the line arm-in-arm with his six Movistar teammates. Additional classifications saw British cyclist Oscar Onley crowned winner of the Young Rider’s standings, as detailed by The Independent.
