Former German Vice-Chancellor Joschka Fischer warned in a recent essay published by Project Syndicate and De Morgen that the political stability underpinning European democracy since World War II is fracturing under pressure from internal nationalism and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
The Rise of the AfD and Political Shifts in Germany
In Germany, the right-wing nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) is advancing toward the center of power. This political shift coincides with the severe electoral decline of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which failed to clear the electoral threshold in recent state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The AfD has capitalized on anti-Western sentiment, particularly in the former East German territories governed by the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), where the party has established deep roots and maintains ties to Russian leadership.
Fischer emphasized that political stability served as a primary pillar of West German democracy following World War II. That stability persisted through the country’s reunification, anchored by a strong rule of law, strategic integration with the West, and a commitment to European integration. However, the current erosion of these foundational pillars raises questions about whether Germany remains firmly anchored in Europe and NATO or is shifting toward an independent national course.
French Political Instability and the European Union
Simultaneously, France grapples with a severe economic crisis ahead of a presidential election scheduled for the following year. Marine Le Pen contends for the presidency, raising the possibility that France could elect its first woman head of state. Fischer noted that both France and Germany—the two largest and most indispensable members of the European Union—now operate from weak internal positions, threatened from within by domestic nationalism.
This internal vulnerability risks paralyzing the Franco-German motor of the European Union. If both nations succumb to political renationalization, the survival of the European Union and the euro comes into question. Such a trajectory could push Europe back toward pre-World War II conditions characterized by inequality and inter-state conflict.
Geopolitical Pressures and European Sovereignty
European security faces mounting threats as the United States signals a potential withdrawal from European security commitments while Russia pursues an increasingly aggressive foreign policy. Fischer questioned whether European sovereignty, values, and freedom can survive past 2027, describing the rise of modern nationalism as an explicit betrayal of the post-war European project and an indirect endorsement of Russian objectives.
