North Carolina Faces Ongoing Recovery Challenges After Multiple Storms

North Carolina is still recovering from last year’s hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Chantal, even as communities deal with new damage from Hurricane Erin. State officials warn that federal relief has fallen short of what’s needed.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Emergency Management Director Will Wray stated that while attention is focused on Erin and its impact on coastal communities, his office and local emergency management partners continue to facilitate recovery efforts in western North Carolina.

The Joint Recovery Office in Asheville remains open, and the multi-agency recovery centers have served over 16,111 survivors of Hurricane Helene, which struck the region almost a year ago.

disaster recovery centers in central North Carolina also remain open, supporting communities impacted by Tropical Storm Chantal.

Wray explained that state individual assistance is available to Chantal survivors while the state awaits a federal decision on its request for a major disaster declaration for public assistance. this declaration would provide additional recovery resources to impacted communities and the state.

FEMA Approves $85M Reimbursement for Helene

Governor Josh Stein announced that FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security approved approximately $85 million in reimbursements for previously approved Helene recovery projects. He also noted that $100 million for other projects still requires reimbursement.

“It creates real financial strain, especially for local governments, but also the state, and so we will continue to work with our federal partners,” Stein said.

Key Takeaways

  • North Carolina is simultaneously managing recovery from multiple storms: Helene, Chantal, and Erin.
  • Federal disaster relief has been insufficient to cover all recovery costs, creating financial strain for state and local governments.
  • Recovery centers remain open in both western and central North Carolina to assist survivors.
  • The state is actively seeking additional federal assistance for public assistance related to Tropical Storm Chantal.
