Technician Crisis Echoes 2021 Nurse Shortage

Technicians are the second largest group of healthcare workers after nurses, serving as the backbone of imaging, surgical care, diagnostics, and other essential functions. But, like the nursing crisis in 2021, this year’s data reveals technicians are nearing a breaking point.

Stretched thin and increasingly burned out,technicians are navigating rising patient demand and insufficient support:

  • 64% report feeling burned out,up from 53% last year.
  • 73% feel they don’t have enough time to provide quality patient care.
  • 61% are actively looking for a new job or plan to within the next six months.

The report also highlights that technicians are significantly underpaid compared to nurses, with a median hourly wage 28% lower. This disparity contributes to dissatisfaction and fuels the desire to leave the profession.

Key Findings for Nurses

The report also revealed vital trends for nurses:

  • Burnout remains high: 57% of nurses report feeling burned out.
  • Pay is a major concern: 68% of nurses believe they are underpaid.
  • Flexibility is crucial: 83% of nurses say flexible scheduling is critically important to them.

Interestingly, the report found that nurses are increasingly prioritizing work-life balance over salary, signaling a shift in values within the profession.
