Rohit Sharma Rests for Final Test, Bumrah Confirms Unity in Indian Squad
Indian cricket fans were surprised to see Jasprit Bumrah take the field for the toss instead of skipper Rohit Sharma in the fifth and final Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Perth. The fast bowler later confirmed that Sharma had opted to ‘rest’ for the match, but also emphasized the “unity” within the team.
Bumrah Spills the Tea on Rohit’s Decision
Speaking at the toss, Bumrah said, “Our captain has shown leadership by opting to rest in this game. That shows there’s a lot of unity in this team. There’s no selfishness. Whatever is in the team’s best interest we are looking to do that. Two changes, Rohit has opted to rest and Akash Deep is injured so Prasidh comes in,”
Optimism for Perth Test
The stand-in skipper added, “We’ve played some really good cricket in this series. The last match was pretty exciting. Hopefully we can put up a good show. It seems to be some grass. It doesn’t look to have too many demons or look too spicy. Obviously, there will be a challenge with the new ball, but if you get through it’s always a good batting track.”
Speculation Surrounding Rohit’s Form
Heading into the Sydney Test, there were whispers about whether Rohit Sharma, who had been struggling for runs, would get another chance in the final match of the BGT. Coach Gautam Gambhir fueled the speculation by refusing to reveal whether the Indian captain would play in the SCG Test during a pre-match briefing on Thursday.
Rohit’s Absence Fuels Rumors
While Bumrah confirmed that Sharma had rested, the veteran batsman was notably absent from the squad for the national anthem, and his name was missing from the Test sheet released by the BCCI. These omissions suggest that Rohit may not be entirely happy with the decision to be rested.
