A28 Road Closures Extended Due to Ongoing Repairs

Motorists traveling on the A28 highway in the Netherlands should expect extended closures this week as Rijkswaterstaat continues essential repair work. Several sections of the A28 will be closed during nighttime hours, impacting travel between Zwolle, Meppel, and Ommen.

Current Closures and Schedules

As of February 26, 2026, the following closures are in effect:

  • Ommen to Lankhorst: Night closures are extended from February 24-27, 2026. Rijkswaterstaat has announced these closures will continue to facilitate repairs.

Recent Delays and Repair Work

Repairs to the A28 between Zwolle and Meppel are taking longer than initially anticipated, resulting in the extension of nighttime closures. De Stentor reports that these delays are due to the complexity of the asphalt repairs.

Long-Term Asphalting Project

A larger project to replace the asphalt on the A28 between Zwolle and Meppel began on October 7, 2024. Meppel Nieuws details that this 13-kilometer stretch of highway is being resurfaced in phases. During peak hours, traffic is reduced to two lanes in each direction, with an expected additional travel time of approximately 20 minutes. A speed limit of 90 kilometers per hour is in effect during these periods.

Incident Near Zwolle Causes Additional Delays

A separate incident involving a truck in the ditch near Zwolle is causing significant delays on the A28 heading towards Meppel. Numeppel.nl reports that recovery efforts are complicated by the vehicle being stuck in the soft shoulder.
