A$AP Rocky’s Assault Trial Begins: Rapper Claims Self-Defense
A Los Angeles courtroom is abuzz as the much-anticipated assault trial of Grammy-nominated rapper A$AP Rocky began Friday. Rakim Mayers, as he is legally known, faces two felony charges stemming from a 2021 altercation with former friend and fellow artist Terell Ephron.
A jury of 12 was carefully selected over three days, setting the stage for a high-profile case that is expected to last approximately three weeks. The prosecution alleges that Mayers, during a heated argument near a Hollywood hotel, brandished a firearm in a threatening manner before firing it twice in Ephron’s direction, resulting in minor injuries. Ephron testified last year that bullets grazed his knuckles, leading him to seek medical treatment.
Mayers, who has pleaded not guilty, maintains that he acted in self-defense. His attorney, Joe Tacopina, claims the weapon involved was a prop gun incapable of firing real ammunition. Mayers rejected a plea offer that would have seen him serve 180 days in prison, opting instead to fight the charges in court.
This trial comes at a pivotal moment in Mayers’ career. He is set to co-chair the prestigious 2025 Met Gala alongside Anna Wintour, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams and LeBron James. Later this summer, he is slated to star alongside Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s upcoming film, "Highest 2 Lowest."
With high-profile endeavors looming, the outcome of this trial carries significant weight for Mayers’ future. Rihanna, his partner and mother to their two children, is expected to be present throughout the proceedings, as the world watches to see how this legal battle will unfold.
