## Pregnant and Alone: A Mother’s Desperate Plea from the Streets of Zaragoza
Eli, an eight-month pregnant woman, has been living on the streets for nine months in the city of Zaragoza (Spain). As her father, her only family support, died, she has found herself completely alone, without resources and surviving in undignified conditions while facing an advanced pregnancy.
Although she is registered in the Las Fuentes neighborhood of Zaragoza, the assigned social worker has not provided her with the necessary support. According to Eli, he has warned her that when her daughter is born they will take her away from her.she expresses it desperately: “I want you to help me so I can stay with my daughter, work, take care of her, for her to be with me. I just need support, not for them to take her away from me.”
During the homeless count, the press recorded her testimony, but her story was never published. The invisibility continues.
Eli has gone to all entities looking for help. From the hostel she only received a dining card and a jacket. She has no place to sleep, no support for her pregnancy, and no basic clothing for her baby, who will be born in a matter of weeks. The girl’s father is not responsible for her or the future daughter. This situation is a social tragedy, a violation of rights and a possible legal breach by the City Council and social services.
### Legal obligations that the Zaragoza City Council is failing to comply with:
- Right to decent housing – Spanish Constitution (art. 47)
the Constitution recognizes that “all Spaniards have the right to enjoy decent and adequate housing” and obliges public powers to promote the necessary conditions to make it effective. Leaving a pregnant woman on the street fails to fulfill this constitutional duty. - Social protection duty – Social services Law
Current social legislation, including the applicable regional regulations, obliges municipal social services to care for people in situations of extreme vulnerability, provide emergency resources and guarantee the protection of the health, dignity and integrity of people at risk. - Specific municipal obligations
In Zaragoza, the municipal social care framework establishes immediate care resources for homeless people, urgently needed aid, the obligation to care even for people without a fixed address and a Comprehensive Homelessness Care Plan that obliges the City Council to provide housing alternatives and social support. - jurisprudence that obliges city councils to protect homeless people
In 2024,a judge forced Badalona City Council to provide immediate accomodation to homeless people it had left on the streets. The court accused the City Council of leaving them “completely helpless.”
It’s not just Eli. It is a structural failure.
Eli’s situation is a clear example of how institutions fail, abandon and violate fundamental rights.
