Daniel Berger Leads at Arnold Palmer Invitational After Stellar 63
Orlando, Florida – Daniel Berger surged to the top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Thursday, carding a remarkable 9-under-par 63 at Bay Hill Club and Lodge. Field Level Media and SuperSport report that Berger holds a three-stroke advantage over Collin Morikawa and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg.
Berger’s Impressive Round
Berger’s performance was highlighted by nine birdies, with six coming on the back nine. He completed a bogey-free round, showcasing precision with his irons and wedges. Approaches at the 7th, 10th, and 11th holes set up birdie opportunities from 6, 4, and 2 feet, respectively.
Chasing the Leader
Collin Morikawa and Ludvig Aberg both finished the day at 6-under 66, trailing Berger by three strokes. Morikawa, fresh off a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month, demonstrated a strong finish with an eagle at the 16th, followed by birdies on the 17th and 18th.
Berger’s Road to Recovery
This strong showing marks a significant step in Berger’s comeback. He hadn’t secured a PGA Tour win since 2021 and faced setbacks due to injuries, missing half of 2022 and all of 2023 with a back injury. He too suffered a broken finger late last season, requiring four months of recovery. “The biggest thing for me is just getting in a bit of a rhythm,” Berger stated.
Other Notable Performances
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler carded a 70, while Rory McIlroy finished at even-par, with a round that included five birdies and a double bogey.
Looking Ahead
Berger anticipates challenging conditions for the remainder of the tournament at Bay Hill. He predicts the course will play similarly to a U.S. Open, with fast greens and potential wind.
