Cameron Young Wins Players Championship After Ludvig Åberg’s Dramatic Collapse
Cameron Young secured his second PGA Tour title on Sunday, winning The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass after a stunning collapse by overnight leader Ludvig Åberg. Young finished at 13 under par, edging out Matt Fitzpatrick by one stroke.
Åberg’s Late-Round Struggles
Ludvig Åberg, who began the final round with a three-shot lead, experienced a significant downturn in form on the back nine. Bogies on the 11th and a double bogey on the 12th proved pivotal, opening the door for Young and Fitzpatrick to challenge for the title. Åberg ultimately finished in a tie for fifth at nine under par.
“Obviously really disappointed,” Åberg stated after his round. “I felt like I was striking it okay early on. Got away with a few things… But overall pleased with the week. Obviously today the back nine was not excellent, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.” He attributed his struggles to poor swings, specifically a recurring miss with his seven-wood.
Young Capitalizes on Åberg’s Errors
Young, who was challenging for the lead late on Saturday before a double bogey on the 18th, rebounded strongly on Sunday. A birdie on the 17th tied him with Fitzpatrick at the top of the leaderboard. He secured the win with a par on the 18th after Fitzpatrick missed a crucial par putt.
“I have high expectations of myself, I believe in my ability coming down the stretch and don’t necessarily sense I get myself in these positions enough,” Fitzpatrick said after the round. “In the last 12 months I’ve done a better job of it, but I feel like when I do get in these positions I deliver myself a good chance to move on and win.”
Fitzpatrick’s Near Miss
Matt Fitzpatrick too had a chance to win, but a poor finish to his third round and a missed par putt on the 18th ultimately cost him. He finished as runner-up, one stroke behind Young.
