Auckland’s Beloved Fine Dining Destination, The Grove, to Close Its Doors
Auckland’s culinary scene is mourning the loss of a beloved institution. The Grove, a renowned restaurant celebrated for its modern New Zealand cuisine with a French twist, announced its closure on March 1, 2023, after two decades of serving exquisite meals and creating unforgettable dining experiences.
A Legacy of Culinary Excellence
Owners Michael and Annette Dearth shared the news on Facebook, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the incredible journey they’ve shared with patrons. “From humble beginnings to achieving accolades beyond our dreams, we are immensely proud of what we’ve built – a place where people come together to celebrate milestones, share meals, and create memories that will last a lifetime,” they wrote.
The Grove’s accolades speak volumes about its culinary prowess. In 2018, it was ranked number nine in the Traveller’s Choice Awards on TripAdvisor. Prior to that, it garnered recognition at prestigious awards ceremonies like the Metro Peugeot Awards and the Cuisine Good Food Awards, even earning a spot among the world’s top 100 restaurants by the esteemed French ranking and restaurant guide, La Liste.
Challenges and the Difficult Decision
Michael Dearth, speaking to the NZ Herald, revealed the multitude of factors contributing to the closure. “It’s been such a fight – from the pandemic, to so much uncertainty [with the] global financial crisis and extreme weather events where suddenly vegetables cost more than protein… To produce what our expectations are for this restaurant and to keep up with those expectations that we have and that other people have for The Grove… you know, there’s only so much we can charge.”
The renewal of their lease presented a pivotal moment. Faced with a six-year commitment, the Dearths decided against it, marking the end of an era.
A Farewell to a Culinary Icon
The Grove has been more than just a restaurant; it has been a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, hosting a diverse clientele, including celebrities like Pat Benatar, Michael Stipe, Eva Longoria, and Sir Ian McKellen.
While The Grove’s doors will close, the Dearths’ culinary legacy continues. Their waterfront restaurant, Baduzzi, remains open, offering a different yet equally enticing dining experience.
A Lasting Impact
The closure of The Grove marks a significant loss for Auckland’s culinary landscape. Its dedication to excellence, innovative cuisine, and warm ambiance have left an indelible mark on the city’s dining scene.
