Volcanic Activity Update – August 6,2023
Lewotolo (Lesser Sunda Islands): Explosive activity continues. VAAC Darwin reported a volcanic ash plume rising to an estimated 6000 ft (1800 m) altitude, or flight level 060, moving northwest. (6 Aug)
Dukono (Halmahera): VAAC Darwin reports continuous volcanic ash emissions to flight level 060, last reported on August 5th at 1138Z. (5 Aug)
Kilauea (Hawai’i): Episode 30 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began with vigorous fountaining at approximately 1:20 a.m. HST on August 6th. Fountains are currently 150-300 feet (45-90 meters) high from the north vent, covering about 20% of the crater floor.A new vent has formed south of the old south vent area, producing lower volume flows. Past episodes have seen fountains exceeding 1000 feet (300 meters) and plumes up to 20,000 feet (6000 meters).Current winds suggest emissions might potentially be distributed southwards. Lava became visible in the north vent at 12:55 a.m.HST and began overflowing at 12:56 a.m., with spattering and flows from the south vent beginning at 1:12 a.m. HST. Sustained, high lava fountaining is expected to begin soon. (6 Aug)
Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): Explosive activity continues. VAAC Washington warned of a volcanic ash plume rising to an estimated 22000 ft (6700 m) altitude, or flight level 220, moving northwest at 25 kts.
Sangay (Ecuador): VAAC Washington reports no volcanic emissions.Reventador (Ecuador): Explosive activity reported.
