Sword Strikes Audience Member During ‘Richard III’ Performance in Berlin
A performance of William Shakespeare’s Richard III at the Schaubühne theater in Berlin was halted Thursday night after an audience member was injured by a stage sword, The Modern York Times reported. The incident occurred as actor Lars Eidinger, playing the title role, accidentally lost his grip on the prop during a fight scene.
What Happened?
During a particularly intense moment in the play, where Richard prepares to battle Richmond, Eidinger’s sword slipped from his hand and struck an elderly woman in the front row, injuring her on the head, according to Broadway World. The actor immediately apologized and rushed to check on the woman’s condition.
Eidinger requested the house lights be turned on and asked if a doctor was present in the audience. A physician in attendance came forward and provided initial first aid before escorting the injured patron out of the auditorium. After determining the woman was bleeding, Eidinger announced the performance would be stopped, Broadway World reported.
Production Details and Safety
The production of Richard III, directed by Thomas Ostermeier, is known for its immersive staging, with the front row of seats positioned very close to the stage, as noted by Broadway World. A spokesperson for the Schaubühne stated the theater was “in shock” following the incident.
An ambulance was not required, and the theater has extended its wishes for the audience member’s speedy recovery. Eidinger reportedly spoke with the injured woman personally. The theater is now considering whether changes to the staging are necessary.
