Adriana Araújo, a prominent figure in Brazil’s samba scene, has died of a brain aneurysm at the age of 49. The singer passed away on Monday, March 2nd, at the Odilon Behrens Metropolitan Hospital in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, after collapsing at her home on Saturday, February 28th.
Rising Star of Samba
Araújo, who had over 70,000 followers on Instagram, gained widespread recognition during the Covid-19 pandemic for her intimate rooftop concerts, which she livestreamed to a growing online audience. These performances not only showcased her talent but also served as a fundraising effort for families in need in the Primeiro de Maio and São Marcos neighborhoods.
Early Life and Career
Born and raised in the favela of Pedreira Prado Lopes in Belo Horizonte, Araújo began her artistic journey with Afro dance and theatre workshops. She launched her solo career in 2020, alongside her husband, as part of the Simplicidade Samba group, quickly establishing herself as a powerful voice in the Brazilian music landscape.
‘Minha Verdade’ and Musical Themes
In 2021, Araújo released her debut album, ‘Minha Verdade’ (‘My Truth’), which explored themes of Black pride, ancestry, love, and motherhood. Throughout her career, she performed at significant cultural events in Belo Horizonte, including Virada Cultural, Festival Sensacional, Carnaval de Rua, and Virada da Liberdade, sharing the stage with renowned samba artists such as Leci Brandão, Fabiana Cozza, Arlindinho, and Jorge Aragão.
Tributes and Legacy
Following her death, Araújo’s team released a statement expressing their grief and celebrating her life. “Today we say goodbye to our beloved Adriana Araújo,” the statement read. “Adriana was much more than a great voice of samba, she had a warm embrace, an straightforward smile, a generous heart, and a joy for life that illuminated everyone around her. Samba will deeply feel her absence.”
A wake was held on Tuesday morning at PPL, allowing fans, friends, and family to pay their respects.
Adriana Araújo is survived by her husband, Evaldo, and her son, Daniel.
