AFL Penalties Target On-Field Taunting
The Australian Football League (AFL) has reinforced its strict stance on player conduct, penalizing two athletes for head-rubbing during a match between the Sydney Swans and the Fremantle Dockers on July 10, 2026. Umpires awarded free kicks against both Fremantle’s Luke Ryan and Sydney’s Dane Rampe, highlighting the league’s ongoing crackdown on taunting gestures during live play.
Enforcing the 2024 Officiating Directive
The AFL implemented a specific crackdown on hair-ruffling and head-rubbing in early 2024, following an incident where Fremantle’s Pat Voss gestured toward Melbourne’s Harrison Petty. According to the league’s officiating directives, such actions are classified as taunting and result in an immediate free kick.

During the July 10, 2026, fixture, the rule was applied twice. In the first quarter, Fremantle defender Luke Ryan was penalized for rubbing the head of Sydney midfielder Chad Warner after a missed set shot. A similar incident occurred in the third quarter when Sydney’s Dane Rampe rubbed the head of Fremantle’s Jye Amiss after Amiss conceded a free kick.
Coaches Demand Professional Discipline
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir acknowledged the clarity of the rule, noting that while the frequency of such penalties had decreased over recent months, players must remain aware of the consequences. “The AFL has made it really clear that you can’t do it,” Longmuir said. “So why do it?”
Sydney coach Dean Cox emphasized the importance of professional discipline, particularly for senior players. Cox expressed disappointment regarding the free kick conceded by Rampe, stating that players should focus on the next passage of play rather than attempting to provoke opponents. “You’ve got to adhere to it and be disciplined in the moment,” Cox remarked. “The best teams don’t do it.”
Fremantle Dominates on the Scoreboard
The match concluded with a 38-point victory for Fremantle, with the final scoreline reading 15.21 (111) to 10.13 (73). Despite the loss, Sydney’s performance was noted for the efforts of Coleman Medal leader Charlie Curnow, who recorded five goals during the game, bringing his season total to 50.
