Morocco Awarded Africa Cup of Nations Title After Senegal Forfeiture
Cairo – In a stunning turn of events, Morocco has been awarded the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations title after an appeals board overturned Senegal’s victory in the January final. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled that Senegal “declared to have forfeited the final,” resulting in a 3-0 default win for the host nation, Morocco.
The Controversial Final and Senegal’s Protest
The initial final, played on January 18 in Rabat, Morocco, was marred by controversy. During stoppage time, a penalty was awarded to Morocco, prompting Senegal players, led by coach Pape Thiaw, to leave the field in protest for 15 minutes. Fans attempted to storm the field amidst the chaos. When play resumed, Morocco forward Brahim Diaz’s penalty attempt – a slow chip shot, or “Panenka” – was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, and Senegal ultimately scored the only goal in extra time, securing a 1-0 victory at the time.
Prior Disputes During the Match
Tension escalated earlier in the match when a potential go-ahead goal for Senegal was disallowed in the second minute of stoppage time due to a foul called on Abdoulaye Seck. Television replays, however, showed minimal contact with Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi.
CAF’s Initial Disciplinary Actions
Following the final, CAF initially imposed fines exceeding $1 million and bans on players and officials from both Senegal, and Morocco. However, the original result of the match was left untouched at that time.
Appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport
Senegal has announced its intention to appeal the decision, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, being a potential avenue for further review. CAS is an independent body that settles sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation.
Basis for the Appeal Board’s Decision
CAF cited article 82 of its tournament regulations as justification for the overturned verdict, though this justification was not applied during the initial disciplinary hearing.
