A Personal Story Highlights the Importance of Early Detection
Alex Scherer, a 59-year-old retired detective from the Toms River Police Department, recently experienced firsthand the benefits of advanced cardiac screening. Scherer, now working at the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, was motivated to assess his heart health after his sister passed away from a sudden heart attack just over a year ago. His father and grandfather had also died of heart disease in their 50s, raising his personal concern.
“I got incredibly scared and concerned that, you know, I was a walking time bomb,” Scherer said. He had been experiencing symptoms like leg swelling and shortness of breath.
New Imaging Technology Reveals Hidden Blockages
Advanced cardiac screenings at Jersey Shore University Medical Center revealed severe blockages caused by calcium and plaque buildup in two of Scherer’s coronary arteries. This put him at high risk for a heart attack.
The key to this early detection was a high-resolution photon-counting CT scanner – the first of its kind to go live in New Jersey. This technology, combined with AI-assisted analysis, allowed interventional cardiologist Jeffrey Selan to pinpoint the location, severity, and composition of the blockages with remarkable precision.
“It can allow for early detection of coronary disease,” Dr. Selan explained. “It serves as a phenomenal, detailed roadmap so that when we go in to the procedure, we know exactly what we’re going to be treating and what tools we’ll need to treat it.”
How Photon-Counting CT Scanners Work
Traditional CT scans provide valuable information, but photon-counting CT technology takes imaging to the next level. These scanners detect each individual photon of X-ray energy, providing a much clearer and more detailed image of the heart and blood vessels. This enhanced clarity allows doctors to visualize even small blockages and assess their characteristics more accurately.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
AI plays a crucial role in analyzing the vast amount of data generated by photon-counting CT scanners. AI algorithms can quickly and accurately identify areas of concern, quantify the extent of blockages, and even predict the risk of future cardiac events. This AI assistance helps doctors make more informed decisions about treatment strategies.
Accessibility and Future Outlook
The scans are generally covered by insurance. Approximately 20 similar photon-counting CT scanners are currently in employ in the greater Philadelphia and New York City regions, with increasing availability at hospitals and healthcare facilities.
“I think in the future, this will become the standard of care and the gold standard for all non-invasive cardiac imaging,” Dr. Selan predicted.
