AI Powers Efficiency Gains for Ireland’s Health Service, Saving Over a Million Hours
Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE) has realized significant efficiency gains through the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, saving over a million hours across various departments in the last five years. The advancements were highlighted at the launch of Ireland’s first national AI for Care Strategy at the Mater Hospital in Dublin on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
National AI for Care Strategy Launched
The AI for Care strategy, unveiled by Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and HSE Chief Technology and Transformation Officer Damien McCallion, aims to ensure the safe, responsible and effective application of AI within the Irish healthcare system . The strategy focuses on four key areas: supporting clinical decisions, public health initiatives, research endeavors, and operational improvements.
Significant Time Savings Achieved
Damien McCallion stated that AI-driven automation processes have already yielded substantial time savings, particularly in public health, human resources, and finance . He anticipates a further half a million hours of savings in the current year, building on the progress made during the COVID-19 pandemic . The focus is on freeing up healthcare professionals from administrative tasks to allow them to focus on patient care.
AI Applications in Practice at the Mater Hospital
The Mater Hospital in Dublin is at the forefront of AI adoption in Irish healthcare, having launched Ireland’s first hospital-based AI centre last year . AI solutions are being utilized to reduce emergency department waiting times, optimize hospital workflows, and improve diagnostic accuracy. Specifically, in the radiology department, AI is assisting in the rapid identification of potential pathologies, such as stroke and fractures, with an accuracy rate exceeding 90% and notification times of 2-3 minutes after a scan is completed .
Addressing Job Displacement Concerns
Addressing potential concerns about job displacement, McCallion emphasized that the goal is not to eliminate jobs but to reallocate time and resources. He explained that automating repetitive tasks, such as data entry, can free up clinical staff to dedicate more time to direct patient care, administrative support, and addressing waiting lists .
Safeguards and Human Oversight
Minister Carroll MacNeill underscored the importance of robust safeguards, including mandatory human oversight, to ensure the responsible implementation of AI in healthcare. She reiterated that AI’s role is to augment, not replace, the clinical expertise and judgment of healthcare professionals .
