AIB to Introduce €6 Monthly Fee, Replacing Quarterly Charges
AIB has announced a significant change to its account fee structure, replacing existing variable quarterly maintenance and transaction fees with a fixed €6 monthly charge for current account holders. The new fee, which will cover most current account services, is set to be implemented from July 2026.
Fee Structure Details
The €6 monthly fee will encompass a range of services including card transactions, transfers, card taps, and euro payment transactions. AIB projects that this change will result in an average 12% reduction in fees for customers who currently pay them, with the majority of fee-paying customers expected to spot a decrease in their overall costs. RTE and Business Post both reported on the changes.
Who is Affected?
Certain customer segments will be exempt from the new monthly fee. These include:
- AIB Advantage customers (aged 66 or over)
- Student and Student Plus customers
- Graduate customers
- Standard Care Account holders
- Basic Account holders
- Customers with an AIB mortgage paid through their personal AIB current account
AIB will not charge the monthly fee to accounts that remain inactive throughout the month.
Additional Fee Removals
Beyond the shift in monthly fees, AIB is also eliminating a number of existing service charges for both personal and business accounts. These include fees associated with unpaid items, staff-assisted standing order setups and amendments, and duplicate statements.
Implementation Timeline
The last quarterly fee will be charged on June 30, 2026, covering the period from March 1 to May 31, 2026. The first €6 monthly fee will be applied on July 31, 2026, covering the month of July. To ease the transition, AIB will waive both quarterly and monthly fees for the month of June. The Journal confirms this timeline.
AIB’s Statement
Geraldine Casey, AIB’s Managing Director of Retail Banking, stated that the changes are aimed at providing “cheaper banking with more clarity and certainty around fees,” while also abolishing a range of service charges. She emphasized AIB’s commitment to customer service, highlighting the bank’s extensive branch network, 24/7 fraud support, and upcoming next-generation mobile app.
