Changes proposed to Aircoach routes servicing Dublin Airport are causing concern among commuters reliant on the Wicklow connection. While Aircoach maintains that these reviews aim to optimize routes for customer demand, residents fear the potential discontinuation of the 702 route, which currently serves Wicklow, Bray, and Greystones.
The company claims the initiative seeks to streamline services, aligning them with customer needs and ensuring "quick, reliable, and frequent journeys." However, initiatives similar to last summer’s merger of routes 702 and 703 brought upon longer travel times and raised accessibility concerns for residents. It remains to be seen whether the current review will address these past issues, or merely result in further disruption for commuters.
Deputy Fiona Callaghan, representing Wicklow, expresses concerns about the proposed changes, stating that the 702 route serves as a lifeline for many local residents. She emphasizes the potential negative impact on working families, students, and travelers who rely on this connection for accessing Dublin Airport.
The truncation of the 702 would effectively sever the direct link for residents of Bray and Greystones, leaving them with fewer convenient and reliable transportation options. "Many will be forced to rely on more expensive taxi services, adding to their financial burden, or face lengthy car journeys, exacerbating traffic congestion and contributing to air pollution," adds Deputy Callaghan.
Local transport advocate Sarah O’Connell echoes these worries, highlighting the detrimental impact on affordability and accessibility, particularly for low-income residents. She calls for the NTA and Aircoach to prioritize the needs of Wicklow residents and work collaboratively to find solutions that ensure reliable and accessible public transportation for all.
The situation underscores the need for ongoing dialogue between policymakers, transport providers, and the communities they serve. Open communication and transparency are crucial to ensuring that transportation policies reflect the needs and concerns of all residents. The outcome of these discussions will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the lives of many who rely on the 702 route for their daily commutes and travel needs.
