Ireland Secure Key Quartet with Contract Extensions Ahead of 2027 Rugby World Cup
Ireland’s preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia have received a significant boost with contract extensions for four pivotal players: Bundee Aki, Dan Sheehan, Jamison Gibson-Park, and Josh van der Flier. The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) announced the extensions on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, solidifying the core of Andy Farrell’s squad as they look ahead to the Nations Championship this summer and the challenges of the upcoming World Cup.
Contract Details
Connacht centre Bundee Aki has signed a one-year contract extension, taking him through to 2027. Leinster duo Josh van der Flier and Jamison Gibson-Park have committed to two-year deals, extending their contracts until the end of the 2027/28 season. Leinster’s Dan Sheehan has secured the longest extension, signing a three-year contract that will keep him with Ireland and Leinster until the end of the 2028/29 campaign. Irish Rugby confirmed the details.
Key Players and Recent Form
Bundee Aki, who has earned 69 Test caps for Ireland since his debut in 2017, recently returned to the matchday squad after serving a four-match suspension for an incident during a United Rugby Championship game against Leinster. Wales Online reports the suspension was due to “verbal abuse and disrespect” towards match officials.
Josh van der Flier, the 2022 World Rugby 15s Player of the Year, has 79 Test caps and continues to be a vital presence in Ireland’s back row. Jamison Gibson-Park recently achieved his 50th Ireland cap against Wales earlier this month. Dan Sheehan, a rising star in the game, has quickly established himself as a key player, earning 39 Ireland caps since his debut in 2021.
Farrell’s Perspective
Ireland Head Coach Andy Farrell expressed his delight at the contract extensions, stating, “You cannot underestimate the outstanding contributions of these four players to Irish Rugby over many years. That they witness their futures here is a significant boost, which I have no doubt will delight Ireland supporters around the world.” The IRFU quoted Farrell as saying the players are “key leaders” who consistently perform at the highest standards.
Significance of the Extensions
The extensions are particularly significant as both Aki and Gibson-Park, being New Zealand natives, had been linked with potential moves abroad. Securing their commitments demonstrates the strength of the Irish rugby setup and its ability to retain top talent. BBC Sport highlights that the deals “enable us to plan with confidence towards Rugby World Cup 2027 and beyond.”
The announcement follows Ireland’s recent Triple Crown success in the Guinness Men’s Six Nations, where they finished second overall. All four players were also part of the 2025 British and Irish Lions Tour to Australia, adding further experience and leadership to the Irish squad.
