Caio Araujo Makes History as First Alabama State Player in World Baseball Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Caio Araujo, a pitcher for Alabama State University, has been selected to represent Brazil in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, marking a historic first for the Hornets baseball program. Araujo is the first player in Alabama State University baseball history to compete in the prestigious international tournament.

World Baseball Classic Schedule for Brazil

Brazil will compete in Pool B from March 6-11 at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. Their schedule includes:

• March 6: vs. United States (8 p.m. ET)
• March 7: vs. Italy (1 p.m. ET)
• March 9: vs. Mexico (8 p.m. ET)
• March 10: vs. Great Britain (1 p.m. ET)

The top two teams from Pool B will advance to the quarterfinal round, likewise held in Houston.

Araujo’s Journey to the WBC

Araujo secured his spot on the Brazilian national team after Brazil advanced through the 2025 qualifiers in Tucson. He is the only Brazilian-born NCAA Division I baseball player and one of only two players from the Southwestern Athletic Conference participating in the 2026 tournament. Prior to joining Alabama State, Araujo was 6-5 in two years of junior college Baseball-Reference. As a junior at Alabama State, he achieved a 3-1 record with a save and a 2.63 ERA.

Brazil’s Roster and Tournament Outlook

Brazil’s roster includes notable players such as Dante Bichette Jr., Leonardo Reginatto, and Eric Pardinho Baseball America. The team is returning to the WBC for the first time since 2013. Pool B games in Houston are anticipated to attract significant international attention, particularly Brazil’s opening match against Team USA.
