Suspect Vehicle Recovered in Highway 2 Shooting Death of Birinder Singh, Hate Crime Investigation Sought

The Alberta RCMP has recovered the grey 2022 Ford F-150 believed to be involved in the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Birinder Singh on Highway 2 near Leduc on March 14, 2026, though details regarding the recovery remain limited. The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) is urging police to investigate the incident as a possible hate crime.

Details of the Shooting

According to accounts from Singh’s friends, who were passengers in the vehicle, the incident began when a grey pickup truck pulled alongside their 2012 Honda Civic in the left lane of the highway near Township Road 490 at approximately 2:50 p.m. The occupants of the truck initially gave what appeared to be a peace sign. Singh reciprocated the gesture. The truck then slowed down before accelerating to come alongside the Civic again.

One of the friends recounted that a passenger in the pickup truck lowered a window and fired a shot toward the Civic, striking Singh in the neck. He died from his injuries. The pickup truck then sped away.

Victim Identified, Calls for Hate Crime Investigation

Birinder Singh, originally from India, had been living in Canada for three years and had recently moved to Edmonton five months prior to the shooting. The WSO believes the killing may have been motivated by hate.

“This hasn’t been confirmed by the police, but it looks like the motivation behind the whole incident, behind this murder, was a hate against immigrants,” Jaspreet Singh of the WSO stated on Wednesday, March 19, 2026 (CBC News).

RCMP Investigation Continues

The Alberta RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. While the suspect vehicle has been recovered, police have not released details about its recovery or the ongoing investigation (Edmonton Journal).

Police are continuing to appeal to the public for dashcam footage from anyone who was travelling on Highway 2 near Township Road 490 around 2:50 p.m. On March 14, 2026. Anyone with information is asked to contact Leduc RCMP at 780-980-7267 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (Culture Alberta).
