Alcaraz Cuts Through the Noise to Defeat Fonseca in Miami
Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the third round of the Miami Open presented by Itaú with a straight-sets victory over Joao Fonseca, 6-4, 6-4, on Friday, March 21, 2026.
A Spirited Challenge from the Rising Brazilian
The match, held at the Hard Rock Stadium, saw Alcaraz navigate a spirited challenge from the 19-year-old Brazilian, Fonseca, and a boisterous crowd largely supporting his opponent. Despite the atmosphere, Alcaraz remained focused, saving all three break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Alcaraz’s Experience Prevails
“I think I was really good in crucial moments. I was really good since the beginning until the last ball,” Alcaraz said. “I know how good Joao is, and that’s why I was really focused, every point, every shot.” He attributed his success to staying calm and positive, and to a strong service game.
Fonseca’s Promising Potential
Fonseca has faced tough competition recently, falling to Jannik Sinner in consecutive ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. At Indian Wells earlier this month, he lost to Sinner in two tie-breaks. Alcaraz acknowledged Fonseca’s potential, stating, “For him, playing toe to toe with us, I think he and his team are going to get great feedback to know what he should improve in the future.”
Areas for Improvement for Fonseca
Alcaraz noted that Fonseca’s shot selection and decision-making could be areas for development. “Sometimes he missed a few shots or sometimes he missed a lot of uncomplicated balls given that he doesn’t choose the right shots, the right ball in certain situations,” Alcaraz observed.
Atmosphere and Respect
Despite the fervent support for Fonseca, Alcaraz felt the crowd was respectful. “I would like to say it wasn’t against me, it was supporting him,” Alcaraz stated. “So I think that’s a big difference, which I would say they were respectful, I would say most of the match, just supporting him when they have to.” He enjoyed the atmosphere and focused on his performance.
