Medical Weight Loss Fuels Rise in Aesthetic Procedures, Particularly Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
A growing number of patients undergoing medical weight loss (MWL) treatments, including those using GLP-1 medications, are seeking aesthetic procedures to address changes in facial volume and overall appearance. New data from Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, reveals a significant shift in patient priorities and treatment demand, with facial volume restoration emerging as a key concern.
The Intersection of Weight Loss and Aesthetics
Traditionally, medical weight loss focused primarily on achieving weight reduction. However, over two-thirds (67%) of patients now report that their goals have expanded to include improving their appearance 1. This shift is driving increased interest in aesthetic treatments, with 40% of MWL patients considering professionally administered procedures in a physician’s office or medspa 4.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: A Primary Solution
As rapid weight loss can accelerate visible changes in the face, hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers are becoming increasingly popular for addressing volume loss and restoring facial balance. Healthcare providers (HCPs) report that nearly half (47%) of MWL patients benefit most from HA fillers when addressing post-weight-loss facial concerns 3. In fact, 81% of HCPs identify HA fillers as a top nonsurgical modality following GLP-1 related weight loss 7. Approximately one-third of physicians (33%) have observed an increase in the overall volume of dermal filler injections in their practice due to GLP-1 usage 8.
Changing Patient Demographics and Provider Landscape
The data similarly highlights a change in where patients are receiving GLP-1 medications. Currently, 60% of consumers using these medications obtain them from providers who also offer aesthetic treatments, a significant increase from 49% in late 2024 2. This trend suggests that aesthetic practices are becoming increasingly integrated with medical weight loss programs, offering a more comprehensive approach to patient care.
Specific Facial Concerns Post-Weight Loss
According to Allergan Aesthetics studies, the most common facial concerns experienced by GLP-1 patients include:
- Midface volume loss (61%)
- Skin laxity (50%)
- Facial wrinkles and folds (35%)
Allergan Aesthetics’ Commitment to Education and Innovation
“Allergan Aesthetics is committed to equipping our customers with data-driven insights, education and consultation tools to help guide patients safely and effectively through these changes,” said Glen Curran, Senior Vice President at Allergan Aesthetics. The company continues to study the intersection of MWL and aesthetic medicine, translating emerging trends into actionable insights for healthcare providers.
As Dr. Joely Kaufman, a board-certified dermatologist in Miami, FL, notes, “As a dermatologist, I’ve seen firsthand how medical weight loss can significantly impact the face. This data reflects what we’re seeing in practice – patients who are excited about their weight loss success are looking for personalized, medically appropriate solutions that restore balance, and confidence.”
Looking Ahead
The convergence of medical weight loss and aesthetic medicine is poised to continue shaping the industry. Healthcare providers will need to be prepared to address the unique needs of this evolving patient population, offering personalized treatment plans that prioritize both physical health and aesthetic well-being. Hyaluronic acid fillers will likely remain a cornerstone of these plans, providing a safe and effective way to restore facial volume and enhance overall appearance.
