Alzheimer’s: It’s More Than Just Forgetfulness
You probably know Alzheimer’s for causing memory loss, but it often sends other signals first. Neurologist Dr. Renato Anghinah warns that changes in behavior and mood can show up before you start forgetting things. “Alzheimer’s is frequently enough remembered as a disease of memory loss. But, from a neurology outlook, that’s a limited view,” he says.
The Signs That Appear Before Forgetting
According too the expert, emotional and social changes deserve your attention. “Sudden irritability, apathy, social withdrawal, aggressiveness, or excessive suspiciousness often come before memory lapses. Sleep disturbances, difficulty planning simple activities, or even a sudden change in how you handle money are also warning signs,” he explains.
- Changes in mood and behavior
- Social distancing
- Irritability or aggressiveness
- Exaggerated distrust
- Trouble with sounds
- Difficulty planning simple tasks
- Changes in how you handle money
Thes signs happen because the disease affects different areas of the brain, not just those linked to memory. Defective proteins build up,disrupting interaction between neurons and leading to a progressive loss of function. “That’s why the symptoms go far beyond forgetfulness: it’s a syndrome that affects different dimensions of the patient’s life,” Anghinah explains.
Early detection is key. If you notice these changes in yourself or a loved one, it’s crucial to talk to a doctor. While ther’s currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, early diagnosis can definitely help manage symptoms and plan for the future.
