IMGs Face Barriers to Practice in Australia

Internationally trained medical graduates (IMGs) are vital to Australia’s healthcare system, but outdated regulations and bureaucratic hurdles are preventing them from practicing, according to Australian Medical Association (AMA) President Dr. Danielle McMullen. These obstacles also impact their families and hinder the nation’s ability to address growing healthcare demands.

“IMGs are a critical part of our healthcare system – especially in regional, rural, and remote communities,” Dr. McMullen stated. “Though, the path to practicing medicine in Australia remains unnecessarily complex, expensive, and unclear.”

Despite widespread recognition of their significant contributions, the current system doesn’t offer IMGs and their families the support, transparency, and coordination they need. Many feel stuck in a confusing registration process and are frequently enough forced to work in fields outside of medicine while waiting for approval.

“Many report feeling trapped in a complex and confusing registration process, often having to work outside of medicine while awaiting registration,” Dr.McMullen explained. Discrimination and anti-competitive practices further exacerbate their frustration and feelings of exclusion.
