Andrey Santos Finds New Role Under Liam Rosenior at Chelsea
Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos is experiencing a career resurgence under the guidance of head coach Liam Rosenior, a stark contrast to his previous situation under Enzo Maresca. Santos, who thrived on loan at Strasbourg under Rosenior last season, has become a key player for the Blues since the managerial change in January.
From Rotation Player to Regular Starter
Prior to Rosenior’s arrival, Santos was largely a rotation option for Maresca, featuring in 17 Premier League games but primarily making brief appearances off the bench. Since Rosenior took the helm, Santos has started six of eight games across all competitions, establishing himself as a vital component of the Chelsea midfield.
A Deeper Role Unlocks Potential
The key to Santos’s improved performance lies in a tactical shift orchestrated by Rosenior. Santos explained to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, “Maresca saw me playing a little further forward. Liam had known me for a longer time; he knew my potential, he knew things. I started to drop back a little more, playing as a number five, and that made a big difference to my performance.” This adjustment allows Santos to utilize his strengths in a deeper midfield position, a role he naturally gravitates towards, having played as a number six in his youth.
Familiarity and Trust
The positive impact of Rosenior’s appointment is rooted in their existing relationship. Santos spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Strasbourg, where he flourished under Rosenior’s management and was even nominated for the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award. This pre-existing rapport has fostered a level of trust and understanding that was absent under Maresca.
Versatility Remains a Strength
Despite thriving in the deeper role, Santos remains a versatile player capable of contributing in multiple positions. He acknowledged, “When I was young, I always played like a number six, but here in the Premier League, it’s a little bit different. But I can play in both positions, six or eight, the most crucial thing is to help Chelsea, the coach, and my teammates.”
Looking Ahead
With Rosenior seemingly building his team around Santos, the Brazilian midfielder appears poised for continued success at Chelsea. His transformation from a peripheral figure to a key starter highlights the importance of a manager’s ability to recognize and utilize a player’s full potential.
