Android 17 Beta 2: Bubbles, Cross-Device Handoff, and Enhanced Privacy
Google has released Android 17 Beta 2 for developers, addressing bugs from the initial beta release and introducing several new features focused on usability, multitasking, and privacy. The update, build number CP21.260206.011 and approximately 510MB in size, brings improvements to app management, cross-device functionality, and user data protection.
Bubbles for Enhanced Multitasking
Android 17 Beta 2 introduces an expanded Bubbles feature, allowing users to transform any application into a floating bubble. This windowing mode, similar to conversation bubbles already available on Android, enables users to multitask more efficiently. Users can now create app bubbles by long-pressing an app icon in the launcher. On larger screens, a dedicated bubble bar in the taskbar provides organization and management options.
Seamless Cross-Device App Handoff
A new Cross-device app handoff feature allows users to seamlessly continue tasks across Android devices. Users can start an activity on one device, such as writing a note on an Android phone, and continue exactly where they left off on an Android tablet. When active, Android displays a handoff suggestion in the launcher on nearby devices. This feature supports both native app-to-app transitions and app-to-web fallback, ensuring functionality even if the native app isn’t installed on the receiving device.
Enhanced Privacy and Security
Android 17 Beta 2 includes several privacy improvements. A new system-level contact picker grants apps temporary, read-only access to specific contact fields requested by the user, rather than requiring full contact access. Google has expanded SMS OTP (One-Time Password) protection and implemented new safeguards against unauthorized local network access.
New EyeDropper API for Developers
Developers gain a new tool with the EyeDropper API, which allows them to request a color from any pixel on the display without requiring sensitive screen capture permissions.
Availability
Android 17 Beta 2 is currently available for developers enrolled in the Android Beta Program. The stable release of Android 17 is expected in mid-2026.
