Animated Basketball Returns with Sony and Steph Curry

After the original Space Jam with Michael Jordan in the ’90s, followed by its 2021 sequel starring LeBron James, basketball is making a major comeback in the world of animation. But this time, it’s coming from Sony Pictures Animation, with an original, bold, and visually spectacular project: GOAT.

This animated feature blends sports, comedy, and urban culture in a world populated by animals. The title, GOAT, cleverly plays on both the well-known acronym for “Greatest Of All Time” and its main character: a young goat who dreams of becoming the first little creature to break into a pro league.

A World Premiere in Annecy

Premiered as an exclusive sneak peek at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, GOAT also marks the feature directorial debut of Tyree Dillahay. The screening was introduced by producer Michelle Raimo Kouyate—former executive at DreamWorks and Sony Animation—who described it as “a project driven by a strong and unique vision.”
On screen, we follow Will Harris, an 18-year-old goat with a passion for basketball and sneakers, living in the jungle city of Vineland. Small, broke, but fiercely determined, Will dreams of joining the prestigious Roar League, where the top animal athletes in the world compete in spectacular arenas customized for each biome.

“It’s a love letter to basketball, but also to underdogs—those who have to fight twice as hard to prove their worth,” says Tyree Dillahay.

An All-Animal Cast and a Visually Striking Playground

Will is voiced by Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin and joins the Vineland Thorns, a struggling team led by Flo (voiced by Jenifer Lewis), where he meets a lineup of eccentric teammates:

  • Jet, the charismatic but demanding star,
  • Archie, a retired old rhino turned nurturing father figure,
  • Moto, an uncontrollable Komodo dragon (inspired by basketball legend Dennis Rodman),
  • Olivia, a stressed-out, phone-addicted ostrich,
  • And Lenny, a dreamy, poetic giraffe more into rhymes than rebounds.

Designed as a blend between Zootopia, Spider-Verse, and NBA Street, GOAT stuns with its visual universe: each court is a masterpiece. Volcanic arenas, icy fields lit by auroras, massive living greenhouses, wind-swept canyons—each match becomes a visual and physical challenge.
Eran Alboher is behind the character design. Even Under Armour was consulted to develop species-specific sneakers.

Steph Curry as the Playmaker

Behind the scenes, some of the producers from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are involved—and another true GOAT joined the adventure: Stephen Curry himself.
A four-time NBA champion, two-time MVP, Olympic gold medalist, and passionate producer, Steph Curry personally invested in the project. In a video message closing the Annecy presentation, he told the audience: “This movie is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen. Let’s go!”
“One, two, three: ROOTS RUN DEEP!” he shouted—joined by the entire theater.
