Animated Venom Movie in Development at Sony Pictures
Sony Pictures is moving forward with a new take on the popular anti-hero Venom, this time in animated form. The project, still in its early stages, aims to revitalize the character following a mixed reception to the live-action Venom 3.
A New Direction for the Symbiote
An animated Venom film is currently in development, with Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, known for their work on “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” attached to direct and produce The Hollywood Reporter. This marks the first time Venom will be rendered in full animation for the big screen, despite the character’s long history in animated television, video games, and comic books dating back to the 1980s.
Tom Hardy’s Potential Involvement
Tom Hardy, who portrayed Eddie Brock and voiced Venom in the live-action trilogy, is expected to be involved in the project in some capacity. The extent of his involvement – whether as a voice actor or producer – remains unclear as the project is still in early development The Hollywood Reporter.
Revitalizing Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
This animated project comes after a period of uncertainty for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe following the release of Kraven the Hunter. Even as the live-action Venom films collectively grossed $1.8 billion worldwide, the financial performance of Venom 3 prompted a reevaluation of the franchise’s direction. The success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has demonstrated the potential of animated Spider-Man-adjacent properties.
Expanding Sony’s Animated Slate
Sony Pictures is actively expanding its animated projects, with other Spider-Man related films like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Brand New Day in development, alongside a Spider-Noir television series. The studio recently acquired the worldwide rights to Sylvain Chomet’s “A Magnificent Life” for release on March 27, 2026, and other films like Stephanie Ahn’s “Bedford Park” and Josef Kubota Wladyka’s ‘Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!’ Sony Pictures.
