Apple CarPlay to Get Video Streaming Capabilities

Automakers have been increasingly focused on adding video-streaming options to in-car infotainment systems, aiming to entertain passengers during activities like electric vehicle charging or waiting for children. Now, Apple is poised to enter this space with a feature that could offer a compelling video experience directly through Apple CarPlay.

Video Streaming Functionality Coming to CarPlay

A recent demonstration by YouTuber Thomas Dye showcased the video streaming capabilities within the iOS 26.4 beta. This software version is currently available to developers, and the functionality appears to be robust.

The beta version introduces two key features: AirPlay compatibility and a dedicated Apple TV app. AirPlay will allow users to stream video from compatible apps – such as Netflix and YouTube – directly to the car’s infotainment screen. The integrated Apple TV app will function similarly to the app on iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs, allowing users to browse and watch content from their Apple TV subscriptions.

Safety Considerations and Restrictions

A crucial aspect of this new feature is that video playback will be restricted to when the vehicle is stationary. This is a necessary safety measure to prevent driver distraction. While Apple is implementing these restrictions, concerns remain about potential attempts to bypass these safety features.

Android Auto and Future Developments

Currently, Android Auto does not offer similar video playback capabilities. However, it is anticipated that Google may respond by leveraging its Chromecast technology to introduce comparable functionality to its smartphone mirroring system.

Release Timeline

Apple has not yet announced a specific release date for this feature. However, given its current status in the beta program, it is likely to become available to the public before the end of 2026.

Apple CarPlay Adoption in Electric Vehicles

Apple CarPlay is becoming increasingly prevalent in electric vehicles, with over 800 car and motorcycle models now supporting the software according to InsideEVs. This widespread adoption highlights the importance of smartphone integration for many car buyers.

Regional Availability and GM’s Stance

General Motors (GM) has confirmed that Apple CarPlay will be available in Cadillac EVs in Australia and New Zealand. However, GM remains committed to not offering CarPlay in EVs sold in the United States, preferring to maintain its own in-car software ecosystem.
