Apple launches iPhone Duo foldable with titanium frame

Apple entered the foldable smartphone market on October 23, 2026, with the release of the iPhone Duo, bringing titanium framing and a passport-style folding format to consumers worldwide. Tudocelular.com reported that the device carries a starting price of R$ 21,999 in Brazil, where initial buyers face delivery wait times stretching into January 2027. The launch immediately triggered intense demand, supply shortages, and public scrutiny over hardware durability.

Display Construction and Hardware Specifications

The iPhone Duo features a 5,4-inch Super Retina XDR external display and a 7,6-inch internal folding panel, both supporting a 120 Hz refresh rate and up to 3,000 nits of brightness. Under the hood, the device runs on the 2-nanometer Apple A20 Pro processor, paired with a dual-battery architecture totaling 4,883 mAh and support for 60W wired fast charging. Photography hardware includes a 48-megapixel main fusion sensor and a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens on the rear, alongside a 12-megapixel external selfie camera and an under-display internal lens. The operating system ships as iOS 27.1, featuring layout adjustments for the folded and unfolded screens.

Connectivity and Biometrics

In the connectivity department, the device includes 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and NFC for contactless payments via Apple Pay, while biometric authentication relies on Touch ID integrated into the side button.

Early Screen Faults and Repairability Assessments

Days after shipments began, social media posts revealed internal screens developing cracks and white pixel lines along the central hinge. CNN Brasil reported that Apple acknowledged the defects affecting a small number of units and committed to replacing them through AppleCare. That bar may not be moving far enough away from the screen when the phone is folded, creating a small stress point near the site of the reported breakage, said the company. Francisco Jeronimo, vice-president at market research firm IDC, noted that Apple’s quick replacement offer was the right first step to handle the issues, adding: We all remember when Samsung faced problems with the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, but it also showed that a quick and transparent response can contain damage to a category. Despite these structural challenges, iFixit awarded the device a provisional reparability score of 5 out of 10, citing accessible battery removal.

Rival Reactions and Competitor Comparisons

Competitors quickly capitalized on the launch turbulence. Jornal O Sul reported that Samsung regional branches across Belgium, Canada, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf region launched social media campaigns poking fun at the iPhone Duo display issues. The Belgian account featured the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in a quick clip under the slogan Fold without guilt, while the Canadian video displayed the smartphone folding under the text We could do this all day. Samsung’s British account compared the debut to its own eighth-generation Galaxy Z Fold 8, while Belgian and Canadian posts highlighted the maturity of Samsung’s folding line. In parallel, Tudocelular.com contrasted the iPhone Duo pricing—reaching up to R$ 31,000 for the 2 TB model—with competing devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which has appeared in retail promotions for significantly lower prices.

Supply Constraints and Financial Impact

High demand has outpaced manufacturing capacity. Agora Litoral reported that John Ternus addressed the supply squeeze during a financial briefing, stating that the company cannot yet estimate when production and demand will balance. The executive also cited unprecedented memory component costs affecting the broader device lineup, even as the company achieved a historic fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of $57.58 billion (approximately R$ 311 billion) in phone sales, reached without the debut of a traditional iPhone 18 version during the period. Financial pressures have already resulted in adjustments across various ecosystem devices, affecting the launch prices of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple continues to process hardware replacements for affected customers while managing extended shipping queues into early 2027.
