Apple Challenges YouTube and Spotify with Video Podcast Push
Apple is making a significant move to reclaim its position in the podcasting landscape, directly challenging the dominance of YouTube and Spotify with a new integrated video podcast experience launching this spring. The company’s renewed focus comes as video viewership reshapes the podcasting industry, with approximately 37% of individuals aged 12 and over watching video podcasts monthly, according to Edison Research 1.
A Shift Towards Video
For years, Apple was a pioneer in podcasting, initially through iTunes and later with the dedicated Apple Podcasts app. However, its leadership has waned in recent years, with YouTube currently holding a 39% preference among podcast listeners, followed by Spotify at 21%, and Apple trailing at just 8% 2. YouTube reported reaching 1 billion monthly podcast listeners last year 2.
New Features and Technology
The upcoming update will allow Apple Podcasts users to seamlessly switch between watching and listening to the same indicate within the app. Features will as well include picture-in-picture mode and the ability to download video episodes for offline viewing 1. Unlike the RSS feeds traditionally used for podcasts, Apple is implementing Http Live Streaming (HLS) technology. HLS dynamically adjusts video quality based on network conditions, ensuring a smoother streaming experience for users 2.
Dynamic Advertising and Monetization
Apple is also introducing dynamic advertising capabilities, allowing podcasters to swap ads in and out. While Apple doesn’t charge creators or hosting providers to distribute podcasts, it will begin charging ad networks an impression-based fee for delivering dynamic ads in HLS video podcasts later this year 2. YouTube and Spotify have announced plans for similar dynamic ad tools, but have yet to implement them 2.
A Defining Milestone for Apple
“Twenty years ago, Apple helped take podcasting mainstream by adding podcasts to iTunes, and more than a decade ago, we introduced the dedicated Apple Podcasts app,” stated Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services. “By bringing a category-leading video experience to Apple Podcasts, we’re putting creators in full control of their content and how they build their businesses, while making it easier than ever for audiences to listen to or watch podcasts.” 1
The introduction of video podcasts marks a significant step for Apple as it seeks to revitalize its presence in a rapidly evolving podcasting market.
