Apple Unveils New Studio Display and Studio Display XDR

Apple today announced the next generation of its Studio Display lineup, introducing both a new Studio Display and the high-performance Studio Display XDR. The announcement, made on March 3, 2026, signals a significant update to Apple’s professional display offerings, engineered to complement the Mac ecosystem.

Studio Display XDR: A Pro-Level Experience

The Studio Display XDR is positioned as Apple’s premier professional display, boasting a 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display. Key features include a mini-LED backlight system with over 2,000 local dimming zones, delivering exceptional contrast and color accuracy. The display achieves up to 1000 nits of sustained brightness for SDR content and a peak brightness of 2000 nits for HDR content, with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. [Apple Newsroom]

For the first time in the Studio Display line, the XDR model features a 120Hz refresh rate combined with Adaptive Sync technology. This dynamically adjusts frame rates for smoother motion, particularly beneficial for video editing, animation, and graphically intensive games. The display supports broad color spaces, including P3 and Adobe RGB, catering to the needs of creative professionals in photography, film, and print. [Apple Newsroom]

The Studio Display XDR also incorporates a 12MP Center Stage camera, a studio-quality three-microphone array, and six speakers with Spatial Audio support for enhanced communication and multimedia experiences. Connectivity is provided through Thunderbolt 5, enabling high-bandwidth connections for Mac devices and accessories.

New Studio Display: Enhanced Features for Everyday Users

The updated Studio Display offers improvements for a broader range of users. It includes the same 12MP Center Stage camera and advanced audio system as the XDR model, along with the addition of powerful Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, providing more downstream connectivity for high-speed accessories or daisy-chaining displays. While retaining the 27-inch 5K Retina display, the standard Studio Display features a tilt-adjustable stand. Optional height-adjustable stands are also available.

Compatibility Considerations

Notably, the new Studio Display and Studio Display XDR are not compatible with Intel-based Macs. Apple’s compatibility list confirms support only for Macs with M-series chips, dating back to 2020. Apple has stated that macOS Tahoe will be the final software update for Intel-based Macs, and Intel Macs will not get macOS 27. Security updates will be provided for three additional years. [MacRumors]

Pricing and Availability

Pre-orders for both the Studio Display and Studio Display XDR begin on March 4, 2026, at 9:15 a.m. Eastern Time. The Studio Display starts at $1,599 with a tilt-adjustable stand, while the Studio Display XDR begins at $3,299 with a tilt- and height-adjustable stand. [Apple Newsroom]
