Apple to Expand ‘Ultra’ Product Line Despite MacBook Neo Success
Apple is poised to expand its “Ultra” product line, signaling a continued focus on high-end devices even following the recent launch of the budget-friendly MacBook Neo. While the $599 MacBook Neo represents a departure for Apple, it is considered an exception rather than a shift towards more affordable options, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Upcoming ‘Ultra’ Devices
Gurman reports that Apple is planning at least three new “Ultra”-class devices this year, catering to a premium market segment. These include:
- iPhone Ultra: Expected to be a foldable iPhone with a price tag around $2,000, featuring a large inner display and under-display sensors.
- AirPods Ultra: A premium AirPods model priced above the current AirPods Pro, incorporating computer-vision cameras to enhance Siri’s capabilities through Visual Intelligence data.
- MacBook Ultra: A high-end MacBook with a touch-enabled OLED display, potentially priced 20% higher than current M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models.
‘Ultra’ Branding and Future Expansion
While Apple may not consistently utilize the “Ultra” branding across all high-end devices – as seen with the Studio Display XDR – the company is increasingly leaning towards a “superpremium tier” for its products. Existing “Ultra” products include the M-series Ultra chips, Apple Watch Ultra, and CarPlay Ultra.
Future expansion of this tier is anticipated across other product lines, including the iPad, and Mac. Potential additions include a high-end iPad with a foldable OLED display and a more powerful iMac with a larger display.
MacBook Neo: An Outlier
The launch of the MacBook Neo was made possible by Apple’s increasing reliance on its own silicon, the overhaul of macOS to support ARM processors, and the economies of scale achieved with the A18 Pro chip.
