Late Surge Secures Semifinal Berth
Argentina punched their ticket to the 2026 World Cup semifinals on Saturday, overcoming Switzerland in a 3-1 victory in Kansas City.
Deadlock Broken in Extra Time
The quarterfinal was a grueling affair. Alexis Mac Allister drew first blood in the 10th minute, nodding home a corner kick delivered by Lionel Messi. Switzerland clawed their way back into the match in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye found the equalizer.
The score remained locked at 1-1 as regulation expired, forcing the match into extra time. The deadlock finally broke in the 112th minute when Julian Alvarez fired a strike from approximately 18 meters out. Lautaro Martinez then put the game out of reach, extending the lead to 3-1 during stoppage time in the second period of extra time (120+1′).
Messi Injured Amid Physical Play
The contest was defined by its physicality. Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, required medical attention during a second-half hydration break after a challenge left him with a bleeding wound near his right eye.
Tensions boiled over in the 72nd minute, shifting the tactical momentum. Referee Joao Pinheiro initially booked Argentina’s Leandro Paredes after a collision with Swiss forward Breel Embolo. However, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review reversed the decision, determining that no contact had been made by Paredes and that Embolo had engaged in simulation. Having been cautioned earlier, Embolo was issued a second yellow card and sent off.
Defending Champions March On
Argentina’s path to the final four has been defined by resilience. The team previously clawed back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over Egypt in the Round of 16, followed by a 3-2 extra-time win against Cape Verde in the Round of 32.
The defending champions now prepare to face England on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. in Atlanta. The winner of that semifinal will move one step closer to the World Cup trophy.
