Argentina Strengthens Border Security at Triple Frontier

Argentina is set to increase its security presence at the notorious Triple Frontier border crossing with Brazil and Paraguay, a move that has sparked diplomatic tension with Brazil.

Enhanced Security Measures for Increased Control

The plan, led by the Argentine Security and Defence Ministries, could involve the collaboration of the Armed Forces. Security Minister Patricia Bullrich announced the initiative as part of her “Plan Güemes,” aimed at tightening border controls across all neighbouring countries.

These increased security measures include heightened patrols, the construction of a 200-meter fence near Aguas Blancas on the border with Bolivia, and the implementation of stricter access limits across the Misiones province. The Argentine government emphasizes that the aim is to combat drug trafficking and illegal border crossings.

Conflicting Information and Diplomatic Tensions with Brazil

While Argentina insists on the necessity of these measures, Brazil expressed surprise and concern, claiming to have learnt about the plan through media reports rather than official channels. Brazilian sources suggest that the influx of Argentines into Brazil for tourism and shopping, coupled with a favorable exchange rate, is a major factor influencing the traffic flow.

Bullrich, however, asserted that hitmen and criminals are among those illegally entering Argentina from Brazil. Diplomatic sources from both countries acknowledge that border security remains a constant point of discussion and cooperation.

The construction of the fence sparks further concerns from Bolivia, which has requested bilateral talks, fearing potential disruptions to peaceful co-existence and good neighbour policies.

The Argentine government plans to leverage technology alongside increased manpower. Drones purchased during the previous administration are expected to play a crucial role in augmenting surveillance and vigilance along the borders, including areas like Bernardo de Irigoyen and Salvador Mazza.
