Overland Park Salon Hosts Cut-A-Thon for Children With Hair Loss
More than 15 donors contributed at least 8 inches of hair each during a recent Cut-A-Thon held at Arista Salon in Overland Park, Kansas, to support the organization Children With Hair Loss. KSHB 41 reported that the event provided participants with a free haircut in exchange for hair donations, which will be used to create custom hair pieces for children experiencing medically related hair loss.
Personal Motivation Behind the Donations
Stella Johnson, a stylist at the salon, helped coordinate the event, drawing on her own experience with alopecia areata. This autoimmune condition causes hair follicles to be attacked by the immune system, resulting in hair loss in smooth, round patches.
“I think as women we realize that our hair is so much more than hair,” Johnson said. “We get to provide that wig piece for them or that topper to make them feel more confident and more like themselves.”
Long-time donor Milly Yarbrough participated in the event by donating four 12-inch bundles of hair. Yarbrough, who had not received more than a trim in seven years, noted that the event provided a constructive way to repurpose hair that might otherwise be discarded. The effort also drew a surprise participant from the local news team; KSHB 41 photographer Will Shaw donated his own hair, noting that he tries to contribute to such causes whenever his hair reaches a sufficient length.
Addressing Insurance Gaps in Hair Replacement
Courtney Peteanu, owner of Arista Salon, highlighted that many insurance providers categorize hair replacement systems as cosmetic rather than medical necessities. By partnering with organizations like Children With Hair Loss, salons can provide human hair pieces at no cost to children who might otherwise be unable to afford them.
Find Alternative Ways to Donate Hair Locally or by Mail
How can I donate hair if I missed the event? While the Cut-A-Thon was a one-day event, many salons in the Kansas City area facilitate hair donations. Individuals can also prepare their own hair donations at home and mail them directly to charitable organizations.
What are the requirements for donating hair? Donors at Arista Salon in Overland Park gave up at least 8 inches of hair in a Cut-A-Thon event benefiting Children With Hair Loss. Why is there a need for donated hair pieces?
