West Point Man Dies in Shooting Following Hit-and-Run Investigation

TOWN OF WEST POINT, Wis. – A 37-year-old man from the Town of West Point died Wednesday evening after a standoff with Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies that began as a hit-and-run investigation. The man was shot after allegedly pointing a long gun at deputies, according to a press release from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Incident Details

Deputies responded to a residence on Klamer Road on Wednesday night to investigate a possible hit-and-run incident and contact the suspect. Initial attempts to make contact were unsuccessful. However, a deputy later reached the man by phone, during which he reportedly stated he was armed with a firearm Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

After approximately 45 minutes of communication, the man exited the residence and approached the deputies while pointing a long gun at them. Despite deputies’ orders, he did not comply, leading four deputies to discharge their firearms, striking the subject WD Times.

Life-Saving Efforts and Pronouncement of Death

Deputies immediately began providing first aid, and emergency medical services, already staged nearby, continued life-saving efforts. The man was transported to a secondary location where a UW Medflight team provided further medical treatment. Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigation and Administrative Leave

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has not released the man’s name. Deputies were wearing body-worn cameras during the incident, and a long gun was recovered at the scene. No deputies were injured WKOW.

Following Wisconsin Statute 175.47, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from outside agencies to investigate the incident. The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from Adams, Marquette, Juneau, and Waupaca County Sheriff’s Offices and the Wisconsin State Patrol WD Times. The involved deputies have been placed on administrative assignment and are cooperating with the investigation.
