Aaron Mealy Resigns from Jefferson City Council, Leaving Second Ward Seat Vacant
Jefferson City is seeking applicants to fill the Second Ward seat on the City Council following the resignation of Aaron Mealy, effective immediately. Mealy, elected in 2023, cited concerns regarding “trust, honesty, and accountability issues” within the city hall administration as the reason for his departure. His term was originally set to end in 2027.
Reason for Resignation
In an email statement to local news outlets, Mealy explained that he could “no longer in great conscience continue” serving on the council due to the issues he observed. He emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and mutual respect in public service, stating that their compromise makes effective representation impossible. KOMU 8 and ABC17 News both reported on the resignation.
Previous Concerns Raised by Mealy
Mealy previously voiced concerns about city transparency, filing a complaint with the Attorney General’s office in 2024 regarding alleged Sunshine Law violations. The complaint, as reported by KOMU 8, centered on the city’s failure to properly post notices for meetings concerning city employee benefits.
Filling the Vacancy
According to a new webpage on the Jefferson City website, several requirements must be met by candidates seeking to fill the vacant Second Ward seat:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be a citizen of the United States
- Must be a qualified voter
- Must have resided within Jefferson City for at least one year
- Must have resided in the Second Ward for at least six months
- Must not be in arrears for unpaid city taxes
- Must not be guilty of defalcation in office
- Must not have previously been removed from the office of councilmember
The process for selecting a replacement involves nomination by a current council member, followed by a seconding of the nomination. Nominees must submit a declaration of candidacy within four days of being nominated. At least one public forum will be held to allow residents to meet the candidates before the City Council votes. The vote, conducted by roll call, requires a majority of the remaining council members to appoint a new councilmember. The appointment will serve the remainder of Mealy’s term. ABC17 News detailed the process, noting that Mayor Ron Fitzwater will make the initial nomination.
Council Member Reactions
Derek Thomas, representing Ward 3, described Mealy’s resignation as a “great loss” to the council and the city, praising him as a mentor. Chris Leuckel, Ward 4 Councilman, declined to comment. ABC17 News reported on these responses.
