New Children’s Book Illuminates the Life of Latvian Cultural Icon Aspazija
Latvian Media has recently released a new children’s book, Aspazija, designed to introduce the life and legacy of the prominent Latvian writer and cultural figure to young readers. Written by Daina Tabūna and illustrated by Aleksejs Naumovs, the book aims to make Aspazija’s story accessible to children aged five and up, while also offering artistic enjoyment for older audiences.
Bringing Aspazija’s Story to Life
The book chronicles Aspazija’s life, from her childhood dreams to her emergence as a celebrated literary personality. Author Daina Tabūna, known for her previous works including The First Time (2014), Stasis Salmon and the Ocean of Atlas (2022), and Witches (2023), graduated from the Latvian Academy of Culture with a degree in drama. The narrative focuses on the transformation of little Elsa into the renowned Aspazija, emphasizing her personality development.
Illustrations and Hidden Details
Aleksejs Naumovs, a celebrated Latvian painter and plein air artist, created the book’s illustrations. He immersed himself in Aspazija’s life and operate, studying her writings, photographs, newspaper articles, and letters to inform his artistic vision. Naumovs describes Aspazija as a strong, independent thinker and expressed his admiration for her character. He has previously illustrated several children’s books, including Māras Cielēna’s Princess Aurelia and wood ghosts, for which he received the Jānis Baltvilkas award, and his work is featured in the International Board of Children and Youth Literature (IBBY) Honor List.
Adding an interactive element, the illustrations include several hidden cats, inviting readers to engage with the artwork on a deeper level.

The publication of Aspazija was supported by the State Cultural Capital Fund and the Cultural Program of the Historical Land of Zemgale for 2025. The book is currently available in bookstores throughout Latvia and online at eglobuss.lv and Buki.lv.
