Hugh Freeze, recently fired as the head football coach of Auburn University, has resumed publicly posting his golf scores,a habit that drew scrutiny during his tenure with the Tigers. The actions come after a disappointing 15-19 record over two-plus seasons according to Golfweek, culminating in a November 2025 dismissal following a loss to Kentucky.

A Golfing Habit Under Fire

Freeze began posting scores on the United States golf Association’s GHIN database in early January 2026, marking the first publicly recorded rounds since before his firing. Reports surfaced in June 2025, as Auburn’s recruiting efforts faltered, detailing Freeze’s frequent golf outings as noted by Sports Illustrated. At that time,he had already logged over 20 scores within the GHIN system, including 10 in a 24-day period.

recent Scores and Ongoing Passion

Freeze’s recent scores, an 83 and an 84, where played at what is presumed to be Moore’s Mill Golf Club, where he remains a member. While thes scores haven’t been factored into his official 7.6 handicap – the lowest among SEC coaches before his termination – they demonstrate a continuing dedication to the sport.

Defending His Downtime

Prior to his dismissal, Freeze actively defended his commitment to golf, maintaining that it did not interfere with his coaching duties. During an appearance on David Pollack’s “See Ball Get Ball” podcast, Freeze explained that he would ofen play a round of golf after completing his scheduled commitments as reported by Forbes. At SEC Media Days, he further asserted that his golf game did not detract from his focus on restoring Auburn’s football program.

succession and a New Approach

Auburn’s new head coach, Alex Golesh, acknowledged the question about his own golfing habits during his introductory press conference, playfully noting it was a “setup question.” However, Golesh emphasized his prioritization of football, stating, “I like football more than golf, and I’m terrible.”

SEC Golfing Standings

With Freeze enjoying his time on the course, Shane Beamer of South Carolina currently holds the lowest handicap among SEC coaches, at 7.8.
