High-Speed Chase Across Auckland Ends with Four Arrested After Home Invasion

Auckland, New Zealand – Four men are in custody following a dramatic home invasion and subsequent high-speed police chase that unfolded across Auckland on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. The incident began with an aggravated burglary in Howick and culminated in a vehicle stop on Karangahape Road after a series of dangerous maneuvers and collisions.

Home Invasion and Initial Escape

Police responded to reports of an aggravated burglary at a residence on Bleakhouse Road in Howick at approximately 3:10 PM. The offenders were reportedly armed with a machete and stole a white Ford Ranger from the property. According to Superintendent Shanan Gray, Counties Manukau District Commander, the stolen vehicle was quickly sighted heading towards East Tāmaki.

Dangerous Pursuit Through Auckland

The pursuit that followed saw the Ford Ranger driven dangerously through several Auckland suburbs, including Ōtara and Manukau, before entering the Southern Motorway and heading towards the city center. Police reported the vehicle was driven at high speeds and repeatedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road, posing a significant risk to public safety. The police helicopter, Eagle, monitored the vehicle’s movements from above.

During the chase, the ute was involved in multiple collisions with vehicles belonging to members of the public and rammed police cars on several occasions. A witness told RNZ that the vehicle “smashed their car into motorists coming across the road, then the guy came out.”

Arrest on Karangahape Road

The Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) was deployed and pursued the vehicle onto Queen Street. The pursuit ended with a vehicle stop on Karangahape Road, where all four occupants were taken into custody. Police utilized a distraction device, a non-lethal sponge round, and a police dog to effect the arrests. One person was transported to hospital in moderate condition after being bitten by a police dog. New Zealand Police confirmed the arrests.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal

Superintendent Gray stated that police are extremely fortunate that the reckless actions of the individuals involved did not result in any serious injuries. Police are now seeking to identify and contact individuals whose vehicles may have been damaged during the pursuit. Anyone who believes their vehicle was damaged by a white Ford Ranger between 3:15 PM and 4:30 PM on March 17th is asked to contact police on 105, referencing file number P065783141. RNZ reported on the incident.

Traffic Disruption

The pursuit caused significant disruption to Auckland’s traffic network. Auckland Transport reported detours for several bus routes, including 18, 195, 209, 11T, 11W, 105, WX1, 866 and 966. Stops along Karangahape Road, Ponsonby Road and Hopetoun Street were temporarily skipped.
