Jonathan Wheatley Leaves Audi F1 Role, Linked to Aston Martin

Jonathan Wheatley has left his position as team principal of the Audi Formula 1 team with immediate effect, just two races into the 2026 season. The move follows reports linking him to a potential role with Aston Martin, as the team seeks to stabilize its leadership structure.

Sudden Departure and Binotto’s Interim Role

Audi confirmed Wheatley’s departure on Friday, citing “personal reasons.” Formula1.com reports that Mattia Binotto, currently the Head of Audi F1 Project, will take over Wheatley’s responsibilities as team principal in the interim. Wheatley had been with the team, formerly Kick Sauber, since April 2025, overseeing a points finish at Silverstone and the transition to the full Audi works team for the 2026 season.

Aston Martin’s Leadership Changes and Newey’s Role

Wheatley’s exit comes amid changes at Aston Martin. Adrian Newey stepped back from the role of team principal in November 2025 to focus on his position as Executive Chairman and Managing Technical Partner. ESPN reports that Wheatley was considered as a potential replacement for Newey as day-to-day team boss, though a deal was not finalized at the time of Audi’s announcement.

Stroll Reaffirms Commitment to Newey

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll released a statement emphasizing his continued partnership with Adrian Newey. Stroll described Newey as a key shareholder and strategic leader, highlighting Aston Martin’s unique approach to team management. According to ESPN, Stroll stated Newey’s focus remains on strategic and technical leadership.

Potential for Horner to Join Aston Martin

Reports suggest Lawrence Stroll recently met with former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. However, sources indicate Adrian Newey is opposed to Horner joining Aston Martin. Newey left Red Bull in April 2024 following a strained relationship with Horner.

Wheatley’s Contract and Future Plans

Wheatley was under contract with Audi for the remainder of the year but agreed to leave immediately. He will be subject to a period of “gardening leave” before joining another team. A key factor in his decision was a desire to return to the UK by the complete of 2026. The Associated Press notes Audi is not expected to directly replace Wheatley, instead opting for a structure where Binotto retains overall control whereas someone manages the race team.

Aston Martin’s Current Struggles

Aston Martin currently sits last in the championship standings after two races, facing challenges with car development and engine performance. Their engine partner, Honda, is experiencing issues with its new engine, impacting both performance and reliability.
