NASCAR Austin Hill and Shane van Gisbergen Clash Sparks Rivalry Escalation
During the NASCAR Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday, Austin Hill’s No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet was involved in a significant crash after being struck by Shane van Gisbergen’s car on Lap 47. The incident, which ended Hill’s race, has intensified the ongoing rivalry between the two drivers.
What Happened in the Chicagoland Speedway Crash?
The collision occurred as Hill, running in 28th place, attempted to defend against van Gisbergen. Entering Turn 3, van Gisbergen’s car struck the left-rear of Hill’s vehicle, sending it spinning into the outside wall. Hill’s race was over, while van Gisbergen continued.

Hill’s team addressed the incident on pit road, with Hill later approaching van Gisbergen’s car before being instructed to “Big picture, Austin, please” by his crew. Hill then rammed van Gisbergen’s driver’s door before retiring to the garage.
How Has the Rivalry Between Hill and Van Gisbergen Evolved?
The clash at Chicagoland marked the latest in a series of conflicts between Hill and van Gisbergen, who have competed against each other since 2024 in the NASCAR O’Reilly Series. Recent tensions escalated after van Gisbergen accused Hill of causing two incidents at Pocono and San Diego.
In a June video VLOG, van Gisbergen referred to Hill as a ‘spud’. At Pocono, Hill pushed up the track while battling three wide, causing the two cars above him (including SVG) to crash. At San Diego, Hill missed the apex and triggered a multi-car crash, where van Gisbergen was directly behind it and was destroyed in the ensuing melee. Van Gisbergen chose not to talk about Hill when asked in interviews that immediately followed.
What Are the Implications for NASCAR’s Handling of Driver Conflicts?
In recent clashes where drivers delivered payback, penalties were only issued when drivers vocalized their intentions. The RCR team’s radio exchange with Hill—where he said “Just wait” and the team instructed him “don’t talk about it”—was likely the deeper meaning in that exchange.
Why This Rivalry Matters
The Hill-van Gisbergen rivalry has become a focal point, reflecting broader tensions. Their history of on-track conflicts, coupled with verbal exchanges, highlights the competitive nature of racing. The Chicagoland incident is surely only going to escalate after this.
