Austrian Animal Rescue Receives Lifeline from New Board, Averts Bankruptcy

Salzburg, Austria – March 20, 2026 – The Austrian Animal Rescue (ÖTR) has secured its future after a turbulent period marked by financial difficulties and allegations of mismanagement. A new board, led by President Petra Kronreif and her husband Gerhard, has stepped in to address the organization’s debts and ensure the continuation of its vital animal welfare services.

Financial Rescue and Restructuring

The ÖTR faced insolvency following the discovery of misappropriated funds totaling approximately €260,000 by former officials in 2023 . Subsequent administrations struggled to manage the resulting financial burden, leading to a formal bankruptcy filing in late 2025 .

The Kronreif couple is contributing significantly to the rescue effort, with a commitment of up to €200,000 of their own funds . They are working closely with the insolvency administrator, Wolfgang Auer, to implement a comprehensive restructuring plan.

New Leadership and Commitment to Transparency

Petra Kronreif assumed the role of honorary president in February 2026, taking on the responsibility of resolving the organization’s debts . Gerhard Kronreif serves as a voting member of the board. The new leadership is dedicated to ensuring the responsible and transparent management of donations .

Alongside Petra and Gerhard Kronreif, Daniela Ries and Helga Pral are likewise actively involved in the board, working to stabilize the organization and secure its long-term viability .

Continued Operations and Community Support

Despite the financial challenges, the Austrian Animal Rescue has continued to provide essential services, responding to calls involving injured or distressed animals, including cats, swans, and other wildlife . The organization has maintained strong support from its existing network of volunteers, and donors.
